Artist Statement
I grew up in West Tennessee in a small
farming town. The colors of nature had a big influence on me. Every season had
different colors, in the spring came the tulips, daffodils, and my favorite, the
purple iris. These things all inspired my love of color and lifted my spirits
after the cold winter. In the summer my family would visit the Tennessee River
with the blues and greens that I now try to capture in my art.
The beautiful colors of fall all influence my art. There is nothing more
beautiful than a field of white cotton that is just right for the picking, which
is another vision that is always with me when I paint. The polished steel color of the sky on a
foggy winter morning makes for a beautiful painting that can make a powerful
statement.
My first trip off the mainland was to Midway
Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Midway
Island, where the sand is as white as snow and the sunsets seem even more
colorful, helped me to appreciate color even more. Watercolors and acrylic paints are two of my
favorite media. Blending and mixing so many beautiful colors makes art come to
life and brighten our world. Drawing people and nature is a passion. The
media I prefer in drawing are charcoal, graphite and sometimes ink.
Georgia O’Keefe in her paintings of
flowers and cityscapes used brilliant colors that made her an inspiration to me.
Illustrating and writing children’s books are both passions of mine. These influences
make my art original and truly my own.
